Christmas Card Project 2017!

While it is only October, we want to get Christmas cards sent out as soon as possible to several Ronald McDonald Houses across the country. We probably will only be able to send to five at a time, but eventually want to send to all 14 on our list – There will be a blog post next Monday on how to help us with the financial aspect of Hope Alive Ministry.

We are collecting homemade Christmas cards for children, teens and thank you cards for the families to give to the nurses and caregivers. I (Bayley Paharik, Our Founder & Executive Director) will mail them out to several Ronald McDonald Houses.

Do you like to make homemade cards? Well, here is your chance. Please keep messages positive and nothing about sickness like “Get better soon” or “I’m so sorry you are sick.” Also, avoid any religious themes, but you may say “Merry Christmas.” The cards will be sent to Ronald McDonald Houses across the country. We have a list of ones that accept homemade cards that we are planning on sending to this time, but we won’t share the list until a bit later on since we haven’t heard from some yet. If you have suggestions of Ronald McDonald Houses to contact, please email us at hopealiveministry4you@gmail.com or use the “Contact Us” form on this blog. We will then tell you if we contacted them already or not. Please include teens as well. Also, you may choose to make some thank you cards (Christmas/holiday themed!) for the families to give to their child/children’s nurses. Deadline is November 17.

Email hopealiveministry4you@gmail.com or contact us through the “Contact Us” page tab on this blog for the address. Our Founder/Executive Director, Bayley Paharik, will be sending the cards to the various Ronald McDonald Houses or hand delivering some. You may also contact us at either place for any questions. You may use Christmas stickers on your cards. Be creative!

Thank you for bringing sunshine to these families!

Remembering Anniversary of 9/11/01!

Today marks 16 years since the terrorist attacks that happened in the United States on September 11, 2001. Most Americans who were alive during that time will never forget it or what they were doing on that day. Some Americans were too young to remember that day or will never be born yet, but they will know what happened on that day from relatives or learning about it in school.

Americans will never forget the horrors of that day!

Today in particular we remember the lives lost 16 years ago today and everyone who were directly impacted by the terrorist attacks such as the firefighters who helped on 9/11 and are dealing with the effects such as breathing difficulties as a result. We also remember everyone dealing with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of experiencing first hand the terrors of 9/11.

Leukodystrophy Awareness Slideshow – 2017!

September is Leukodystrophy Awareness Month. In September 2013, we made our first ever Leukodystrophy Awareness slideshow. We then updated it in February 2016. We made another Leukodystrophy Awareness slideshow in September 2016 and made an updated version a few days later in September 2016. Our Founder, Bayley Paharik, then made another Leukodystrophy Awareness Slideshow for this month. Please watch it by clicking here. Bayley Paharik made all of our slideshows. In the slideshow, we started with Lipid Storage Disorders since Krabbe Disease and Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD) are both forms of Leukodystrophies and are also Lipid Storage Disorders.

Teaching Children to Accept People with Special Needs!

Teaching acceptance of everyone is an important lesson especially for children. Children and adult with special needs especially need acceptance. Here are some ways to teach children to accept people with special needs:

1. Tell your child that even though they may look different that they still have feelings and are just like them.

2. Allow the child to ask questions if they see someone with special needs. It is okay to ask questions and is better to ask then to stare.

3. Allow the child to see similarities between them and the person with special needs. For example, if they are both children, say that the child probably likes to play just like they do. It may just take them a bit longer to learn things, but that it is okay.

4. Have a positive attitude about people who are different. If your child sees you interact in a positive way with people with special needs, they will see there is nothing to be afraid of.

5. Read some books about children with special needs. The book, “Wonder” is a great one. It is being made into a movie and will be in theatres in November. The book is for ages 8-12.

Everyone is different and that is perfectly okay.
