Summer Card Project!

Do you like to make homemade cards? We are in need of thinking of you cards for children battling life-threatening and chronic illnesses and their families.

Here are the instructions:

1. Please avoid any religious messages since lots of people from different religions will receive the cards.

2. Please avoid anything about sickness such as “I’m so sorry you are sick.” or “Get well soon.” A lot of these children have terminal illnesses and they want a card to cheer them up.

3. Keep the messages positive and hope filled!

Be creative! You may use stickers and you may use a variety of stickers as the cards will go to little kids all the way up to teens.

Please include your name on the envelope, so we know who to thank for the cards and put Hope Alive Ministry somewhere on the envelope.

*You may use any paper you have, but we prefer cardstock since it’s better for mailing.

The cards will be sent to Ronald McDonald House of Pittsburgh and Ronald McDonald House of St. Louis nearby St. Louis Children’s Hospital to the families there.

If you are interested in participating in this project, please use the “Contact Us” tab on this blog to get the address to send the cards to. Our Founder, Bayley Paharik, will receive and then mail out all the cards.

The deadline to send cards is Thursday, July 20.

Thank you for all your help!

Summer Book Drive for HAM idea!

Since summer is just around the corner (June 21 in the Western Hemisphere), we are thinking of doing a summer book drive. We would collect new books for children’s hospitals and Ronald McDonald Houses across the country. Reading helps a child get their mind off their illness and cheers them up. All books would be mailed directly to us via an Amazon Wish List and then mailed to the children’s hospitals and Ronald McDonald Houses across the United States. We hope to collect about 500 books from newborn to teens. Please comment down below if you would be interested in purchasing books for our book drive. We will let you know if we decide to go through with it as well as more details.

How to help families during summer!

Summer is just around the corner – June 21 in the western hemisphere. Summer is a time to unwind from the school year and to make memories. We sometimes have more time in the summer to do fun things. Families facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses need support in the summer and all year round. Here are 5 ways you can help them during the summer:

1. Make homemade cards – You or your kids if you have any can make homemade cards for children battling life-threatening and chronic illnesses. You can join our card program by sending cards every month to the same children or when they need extra cheering up. Click here to sign up to be a monthly card sender. Click here to sign up to send when children need extra cheering up. You can also send us cards that we will send to Ronald McDonald House in Pittsburgh this summer. Fill out the “Contact Form” on this blog to get our address.

2. If you have the money, donate money for a family to be able to attend camps or conferences. Camps and conferences for families dealing with similar challenges can help these families feel like they belong. However, sometimes the organization doesn’t provide transportation, so you can pay a little or sometimes the family sells t-shirts to help with the additional costs. If you can’t afford to donate, you can at least share their link.

3. Go to the library with your children and read books about children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses. By learning about children who are going through challenges, children can learn compassion. You can then share that you taught your children about kids like theirs with the family by posting on their Facebook page. This means a lot to these families since it showed you took time to care and educate your children.

4. Pray for these families – Light a candle at church.

5. Share their story with your children and/or with your friends. Children at a young age can learn compassion from learning about these amazing children and their families. You can help them to draw pictures to send to these children. Showing you care means the world to these families.

*These ideas can be used throughout the year, but you may have more time to do them during the summer while the kids are out of school.

We hope you have a great summer!

Celiac Awareness Month

May is Celiac Awareness Month. Celiac Disease is “a serious autoimmune disorder that can occur in genetically predisposed people where the ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine.” (Source: Celiac Disease Foundation)

Since we focus on children battling life-threatening and chronic illnesses, we want to show how children are affected by Celiac Disease.

Below is a fact:

Celiac Disease affects all ages and symptoms are different in children than adults. Also, everyone is affected with Celiac Disease differently. If you suspect you or your child has Celiacs, please consult your doctor.

If you are affected by Celiac Disease and want to share your story with us, feel free to contact us under the “Contact Us” page tab. We would love to hear from you!

Happy Belated Mother’s Day 2017!

Yesterday was Mother’s Day in the United States and Canada. We hope everyone had a Happy Mother’s Day. We also realize that it can be a difficult day for some people. We especially are thinking of the women who struggle with having children, mothers who have lost their child either during pregnancy or held their child in their arms. We remember you all! You are mothers even if your only child passed away. You are always a mother! We are praying for you always! We are praying for women who have a mother in Heaven as well. Happy Belated Mother’s Day to mothers who have children in Heaven, step mothers, god mothers, grandmothers, women who are mother-like figures and all mothers.

Family of the Month Update!

We took a break from doing Family of the Month since we haven’t had any families to feature. During Family of the Month, we featured a family every month who has a child with a life-threatening and chronic illness along with the child’s siblings if they had any. We would ask for families to send us the child’s birthdate, the child’s favorite things, what they like to do fun as a family and more. We tried to feature a family who had a child with the disease it is the awareness month for such as a pediatric cancer family for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September. We may do it again in future months if we get families interested. Please let us know if you want us to start doing Family of the Month again. We will feature it under our “Support” page tab and then our “Family of the Month” sub tab like we did in the past along with a blog post.
