We are so thankful to everyone who attended our 1st “Wings of Hope: A Childhood
Cancer Awareness Month” on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at Saint Vincent Basilica
Parish Assembly Room from 1-3 PM. At our event, we honored the Thinking of Nikki
Foundation with our 1st “Wings of Hope Award” and awarded them with a plaque
and $250 donation to their foundation as a thank you for their commitment
to help families dealing with pediatric cancer in Pennsylvania. Nikki Deniker passed
away from Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) on August 18, 2009 just 10 days after her
7th birthday. Nikki’s mom, Karen Deniker spoke at our event.
We also made 50 handmade cards for children battling cancer to be donated to
Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando, FL. We played an educational
and inspirational slideshow about childhood cancer. We collected donations for “Joy Jars” –
a project of the Jessie Rees Foundation. “Joy Jars”are filled with small toys and other
fun items and are sent to children battling cancer around the world.
We prayed for the children and families facing pediatric cancer as well as released
butterflies in honor of children battling cancer. We read a proclamation Pennsylvania’s
governor, Tom Wolf signed declaring September 2015 as Childhood Cancer Awareness
