What is faith? The Bible says that faith is “The assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1 – NASB (New American Standard Bible)
Faith is believing God is who He says He is and that He will fulfil His promises even if we don’t see them materializing just yet. Faith is believing in God even though we cannot see Him. We believe and trust that He is real and with us every day, helping us with everything we do, no matter how small. We know, without doubt, that He is with us.
How to develop faith? When we are children we have that child-like faith that God is with us and if we pray, He will answer our prayers. We don’t doubt but just know that God will provide and answer prayers. But as we grow our level of understanding changes and we learn that while God does still answer prayers, He sometimes says “no”, or “not right now”. We learn that God answers prayers according to what is right and good for us and we are not the best at judging what is good for us. We often “think” we know, but God knows us better than we know ourselves. We trust God that no matter what He answers, it is for the best and we can smile and move on knowing God is working for our best interests.
When we turn from sin and follow Christ, we are given a part of God’s nature and He gives us faith. Do not think of yourself more highly than you should, but rather think of yourself soberly, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given to [you] each person. (Romans 12:3)
Faith grows by love. Galatians 5:6. Faith is what saves us and not our good deeds. You can measure your faith by how much you love others.
The longer we are in a relationship with God the more our faith will grow. We will find ourselves acting in ways we don’t understand due to the prompting of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes it is walking up to someone who is need and helping them, when perhaps a year ago you never would have thought of doing such a thing. Faith helps us fight against fear that would have, at one time, crippled us.
Examples of faith are found everywhere in the Bible. Faith is developed also by testing. Abraham’s life is a good example of this. You can read about Abraham’s Example of Faith here.
Paul also tells us that we are to live from faith to faith. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “BUT THE RIGHTEOUS man SHALL LIVE BY FAITH.” – Romans 1:17 NASB
Our faith continues to develop in our relationship with Christ through prayer, reading the Bible, obeying God’s word and applying His word to our lives. Testing will also come but we can be joyful in the midst of these trials because our faith is being strengthened. Developing your faith takes time and perseverance.
